Lamin Manneh, 39, from Manchester and star of the DIY SOS ‘Homes for Veterans’ Special has been appointed as Event Ambassador for The Mobility Roadshow at Silverstone Circuit, Northants, 26-28th May.

Lamin will be appearing at The Mobility Roadshow on Day 1 (26th May) and will be available for interviews and photographs. Contact the Roadshow press office for more details.

To date, the DIY SOS Big Build ‘Homes for Veterans’ Special is the most ambitious construction challenge undertaken by the building renovation TV programme. It involved the redevelopment of an entire dilapidated terraced street in Manchester to provide homes for injured servicemen and women. Lamin Manneh, a disabled ex-Guardsman, and his family were grateful recipients of one of the new accessible homes.

The two-part DIY SOS episodes generated significant press coverage as HRH The Duke of Cambridge and HRH Prince Henry of Wales visited the extensive two-week build. BBC production, in association with the charity Walking with the Wounded, aimed to provide 62 new homes for injured military veterans and their families. The Manneh family was a major focus throughout the show, with Lamin explaining to the Princes the huge difference a new accessible home would make to him, his wife and five children.

Lamin, originally from Gambia, moved to Britain in 2005 to join the British Army. As Gambia is a Commonwealth country, residents are allowed to join the British Armed Forces and Lamin served in the Irish Guards for five years. On New Year’s Eve 2010, he was severely injured by an exploding IED in Afghanistan resulting in the loss of both legs and one arm. Lamin survived this horrific ordeal and now continues to rebuild his life. He will be competing in the forthcoming Invictus Games (Orlando, 8-12th May) and is ‘honoured’ to be an Ambassador for the 2016 Mobility Roadshow later in the month. Lamin will be championing the show to all his contacts and will be attending the Roadshow as a VIP.

Since 1983, the Mobility Roadshow has been the UK’s leading disabled consumer event that showcases the latest assistive products and services for independent driving and mobility. This remarkable event is organised by the charity Mobility Choice so that the widest choice of accessible vehicles, adapted driving controls and mobility products can be trialled and tested. Being held at the iconic home of the British Grand Prix for the first time this year, the Mobility Roadshow will provide the unique opportunity for disabled drivers and passengers to test-drive the latest wheelchair-accessible and adapted vehicles around the Silverstone circuit.

Lamin comments: “I have always had a massive passion for cars and sport so the chance to attend the Mobility Roadshow and drive around Silverstone is a dream come true. I drive an adapted Qashqai however the opportunity to test drive the latest accessible cars at the Mobility Roadshow promises to be unforgettable. Just before attending the Roadshow I will have competed at Rowing, Archery, Shot put and Discus at the Invictus Games, a Paralympic-style tournament for disabled servicemen and women. Hence I will also be really looking forward to playing the various accessible sports available at the Roadshow event and sharing my Invictus experiences. Day-to-day living can be tough with physical disability, however keeping your mental health in good order can be harder. By coming to the Roadshow I hope I can help as many people as possible sustain a positive mental attitude.”

Leamington Spa’s Gold-Medal Paralympic Boccia player appointed as Mobility Roadshow 2016 Event Ambassador

Mobility Roadshow Ambassador Nigel Murray

Nigel Murray MBE, 51, from Leamington Spa and Paralympian Boccia player, has been appointed as Event Ambassador for The Mobility Roadshow at Silverstone Circuit, Northants, 26-28th May.

Nigel, who has entered four Olympic Games to date, was the first British Boccia player to win a gold medal in 2000. Since then, he has won gold with Team GB in 2008 and individual silver and bronze at the London 2012 Paralympics. Nigel received an MBE from the Queen in 2013. He is currently training and coaching with Team GB as they prepare for the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

Being held at the iconic home of the British Grand Prix for the first time this year, the Mobility Roadshow will provide the unique opportunity for disabled drivers and passengers to test drive the latest wheelchair-friendly and adapted vehicles around the Silverstone circuit. The popular Get Going Live! show feature will also specifically focus on the needs of young and novice drivers with disabilities. In addition to these product highlights, there will be the opportunity for visitors to try various inclusive sports including Boccia, Disability Tennis, Powerchair Football and Wheelchair Basketball. Hence Paralympian Nigel Murray was the ideal Ambassador to champion The Mobility Roadshow once more.

Nigel will be attending the Roadshow, an event he has been visiting ever since 1991. During his first visit he was introduced to previously unseen vehicle adaptations and conversions that opened his mind up to the possibilities of independent driving. Nigel has been playing Boccia for over 20 years and regularly travels all over the country to train, coach and compete.  As well as using a powered wheelchair, Nigel is able to drive independently thanks to his Volkswagen Caddy adapted by Sirus Automotive. Nigel’s specialist vehicle has ‘push-pull’ hand controls and a push button gear selector. He also has an automated wheelchair locking device that secures him into the driver’s position.

Nigel comments: “Unfortunately for disabled drivers, we cannot go into a dealership and take a test drive of a car we like as they do not have any driving adaptations.  The closest you can get is sitting in the passenger seat while someone else drives, which is not ideal at all. Test drives at the Mobility Roadshow change all that.”

Nigel continues: “I think it is fantastic that The Mobility Roadshow is coming to Silverstone for the first time. Visitors will be able to test drive adapted and wheelchair accessible vehicles in a safe environment, which will give them a true representation of the vehicles. Without the Roadshow this opportunity would not exist. I also look forward to meeting lots of visitors keen to try Boccia in the Silverstone Wing – I will be there to offer advice and guidance for anyone keen to get involved with the sport.”

Theraposture appoints new Trusted Assessor

Theraposture has appointed Steve Keetley as its new Trusted Assessor for central England – covering the midlands to the east coast.

As established BHTA members, our family-run company is renowned for ethical provision of quality products through its clinically led personal assessments, 14-day suitability guarantee and committed after-sales support. This customer-centric ethos will continue to be delivered by Theraposture’s latest Trusted Assessor – Steve Keetley.

Steve, 45 from Grimsby, Lincolnshire, brings a wealth of mobility and healthcare experience to Theraposture.  During his career, Steve held the positions of Product Development Manager and Regional Sales Manager at Sunrise Medical for over six years. He was responsible for growing the business across Europe and achieved significant success in Northern Ireland. During this time, Steve accrued extensive product knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of mobility-restrictive conditions – which he will now leverage when assisting Theraposture clients.

Steve comments: “I will always have empathy for clients who have been struggling with independence as my late Mother was a wheelchair user. From an early age, I became familiar with her difficulties resulting from conditions such as severe arthritis and Kyphosis. Combined with my commercial experience, this has given me real insight to the difficulties people can face and how important it is to remain at home on your own terms. The Theraposture name is synonymous with trust and peace of mind, hence I am proud to part of this successful and caring company.”

Steve continues: “I have enjoyed completing my extensive Trusted Assessor training over the past few months and have been thoroughly impressed by the ethical approach Theraposture takes in terms of product provision. The whole team is totally focused on ensuring every customer receives the ideal solution for his or her needs and product quality is second-to-none. When you consider the precision and reliability of the German engineering in our original Rotoflex bed, there is no other rotating bed that comes close.”

David Holtum, Theraposture Managing Director, concluded: “It has been a pleasure introducing Steve to our existing and developing customer base and I believe he will be a real asset for Theraposture. His pro-active and understanding attitude is exactly what we demand of our Trusted Assessors. He joins the business at an exciting time as we continue to grow and introduce new services.”

Outside of Theraposture, Steve is a keen collector of Lambretta and Vespa scooters and has two daughters aged 21 and 27.

Theraposture partnerships with Newlife charity and Symmetrikit prove successful at OT Show

Theraposture, the UK’s leading specialist in assistive beds and cots, has achieved significant interest from Occupational Therapists at the OT Show (26-27 Nov, Stand E40, NEC), whilst successfully supporting Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children and Symmetrikit Postural Care.

Working closely with Occupational Therapists (OTs) since 1981, Theraposture continues to be a respected supplier of bespoke, hand-built adjustable beds, chairs and cots. Its products enhance comfort, safety and well being for individuals living with mobility difficulties and greatly assist those offering care. Theraposture personalised assessments are highly regarded by OTs as they ensure their clients always receive the ideal solution to meet individual needs. This is furthered by Theraposture’s 14-day Suitability Guarantee and fully inclusive warranties that provide peace of mind. These services were explained to large numbers of healthcare professionals at the show, along with the chance to win an iPad Mini and see the original patented Rotoflex bed and the modular Mascot Mark 2 cot.

The Rotoflex is a trusted, proven and effective solution that allows users to manage bed transfers on their own terms. Its powered functionality assists individuals with getting into and out bed and achieving a seated position ready for a standing transfer. This results in significant cost savings as help from carers is not required and lifestyle benefits are enhanced through user independence.

The example on display consisted of a Rotoflex double combination bed with contemporary oak surround – demonstrating how Theraposture power-adjustable beds can blend into any domestic setting. Alongside the Rotoflex, the latest Mascot Mark 2 cot was also showcased which provides a ‘future-proof, whole life solution’ through adaptable design. It meets the changing requirements of a disabled child and eliminates the need to purchase and specify new cots in the future – the most cost effective concept ever.

Sharing Theraposture’s stand, Heather Campbell, Awareness Manager for Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children was able to raise awareness of the charity and demonstrate its connections to this proven assistive furniture specialist. Theraposture is an established supplier to Newlife as it provides essential, supportive equipment to children with disabilities and life-limiting conditions. This proven relationship delivers positive outcomes for disabled children and their families.

In addition to its joint showcase with Newlife, Theraposture also worked alongside Symmetrikit Postural Care to demonstrate complete sleeping solutions. On stand C30, a Theracare bed from Theraposture was displayed with a Symmetrikit Sleep System that together, provide high levels of safety, accessibility and assistance with correct postural positioning. Maintaining the correct posture whilst asleep is so important for individuals with specific conditions, especially in relation to children who are continually developing and growing. The Theracare bed provides the powered function of a variable height bed, but with the added advantage of low access.

We are proud to support the positive outcomes that Newlife deliver for so many families across the UK and believe Symmetrikit solutions lead the market in terms of postural care. Both our original Rotoflex bed and pioneering Mascot cot received considerable interest from OTs during both days. OTs were able to understand first-hand why our products have been trusted by healthcare professionals and their clients since 1981.”
