2016 London Marathon Competitor commits to disability fund-raising for Mobility Choice and Scope

Tom Dixon running for Mobility Choice & Scope

Committed marathon competitor, Tom Dixon, aged 36, is running in the 2016 London Marathon and raising all important funds for disability charities Mobility Choice and Scope.

UK charity Mobility Choice was established in 1998 and focuses on advancing independent mobility for people with disabilities and older people. It is responsible for organising the annual Mobility Roadshow and similar events, establishing advice and guidance centres and overseeing specialist driving programmes for disabled and older people. Scope is a charity that focuses on driving change across society – so that disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else.

Tom, who lives in Amersham, South Buckinghamshire, competed in his first London Marathon in 2000, aged 20. At the time he was raising money for breast cancer research following the death of his Grandmother from the disease. The Dublin and Edinburgh Marathons followed in 2002 and 2003 before Tom headed to New York in 2008. He comments, “Running the New York Marathon was an incredible experience – I loved the atmosphere and culture and I met some amazing people. It was also a great way to see the city!”

Since then, Tom has completed the 2010 London Marathon as well as a couple of Ultra Marathons with a distance of over 50kms which he says “were tough, especially the hilly one on Dartmoor!”. In 2008, Tom began using marathon competitions as a way of fund raising for disability charities. He had just begun working for Scope having been inspired to do so by his aunt, previously a Director of Scope in Wales.

Tom elaborates, “Before she retired, my aunt was a tireless disability campaigner who worked in Europe and the UK promoting disability rights. At the age of 33, she had a stroke which left her with impaired movement down her right side. She has been an inspiration to me in many ways and I wanted to work with like-minded people. I have been raising funds for Scope since joining the charity. It’s an incredible cause – changing society’s attitudes towards disabled people makes a huge difference.”

In 2013, Tom joined Mobility Choice as a trustee. He has been able to use his knowledge of disability fundraising to support the charity and The Mobility Roadshow – an annual mobility event for people with disabilities organised by Mobility Choice.

Tom explains, “The Mobility Roadshow is a fantastic event giving people with disabilities the opportunity to try accessible equipment, test drive adapted vehicles and enhance their own independence and mobility requirements. I would love as many people as possible to continue to benefit from this annual event. That’s why I would like to raise as much money as possible when I run the London Marathon in April.”

Tom has trained hard across the winter months with the Chiltern Harriers, competing in club cross country competitions and testing his limits. He is aiming for a personal best time of just under 3 hours in the London Marathon and hoping he can inspire people to support him with donations to Mobility Choice and Scope.

Mobility Roadshow 2015 – More Innovations for Consumer Independence than Ever Before

The Mobility Roadshow is returning in 2015 (25-27 June, Donington Park, Derby) to provide the most comprehensive lifestyle event of its kind in the UK, presenting mobility solutions for a wider range of consumers with restricted mobility to help achieve greater independence.

The Mobility Roadshow is the UK’s premier consumer-focused event, showcasing products and services to help maintain independent mobility. This unique national show, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2013, is organised by registered charity Mobility Choice.

For 2015 the Mobility Roadshow returns to Donington Park where visitors will have the rare opportunity to test drive adapted and wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs) on the historic Donington Circuit, as well as experience the very latest innovations for independence. There is no other event that can offer such a range of vehicles for test-driving or products and services to see and compare – a unique opportunity unequalled in the mobility exhibition calendar.

The 2015 Mobility Roadshow will be different. Its refreshed format will be dynamic, engaging and include features for a wider audience. It will deliver invaluable benefits to all visitors ranging from children to mature individuals who are looking to enhance their freedom, with hands-on product demonstrations and exclusive show features.

Restricted mobility affects millions of people across the UK in different ways. Hence the opportunity to experience and compare wide-ranging independent living solutions all in one location is vital. The Roadshow provides a larger, more diverse showcase than other regional shows. Not an ‘exhibition’ but an ‘event’, the 2015 Roadshow will also incorporate Get Going Live! – a sister event also organised by Mobility Choice that focuses on young and novice disabled drivers. This lively and exciting feature will open up a new world of driving opportunities for future generations.

The Mobility Roadshow 2015, as always free to visit, will be a ‘must-attend’ event for:

·         Drivers, passengers and non-drivers that live with disability or restricted mobility

·         Young and novice drivers with disabilities seeking independence

·         Middle-aged to mature individuals requiring assistance for ‘comfortable driving’ or ‘easier living’

·         More mature people requiring help indoors, outside, or when travelling as a vehicle passenger

·         Families/parents with disabled children or elderly relatives

Ann Frye, Chair of Mobility Choice, comments: “In partnership with the NFE Group, the Mobility Choice team and I are fully committed to delivering a Mobility Roadshow that surpasses all others. Our 2015 event will remain true to our singular ethos since the show’s inception over 30 years ago – to provide the largest and best consumer- focused mobility show.”

The Rotoflex is a trusted, proven and effective solution that allows users to manage bed transfers on their own terms. Its powered functionality assists individuals with getting into and out bed and achieving a seated position ready for a standing transfer. This results in significant cost savings as help from carers is not required and lifestyle benefits are enhanced through user independence.

The example on display consisted of a Rotoflex double combination bed with contemporary oak surround – demonstrating how Theraposture power-adjustable beds can blend into any domestic setting. Alongside the Rotoflex, the latest Mascot Mark 2 cot was also showcased which provides a ‘future-proof, whole life solution’ through adaptable design. It meets the changing requirements of a disabled child and eliminates the need to purchase and specify new cots in the future – the most cost effective concept ever.
