Age UK, in conjunction with The Forum of Mobility Centres and Mobility Choice, charity organiser’s of The Mobility Roadshow, would like to invite all consumers, trade representatives and healthcare professionals interested in driving options and future opportunities for older people. A series of informative sessions have been arranged to take place during the day discussing driving challenges and mobility choices.

The day will commence at 10am with a welcoming reception in the Silverstone Wing followed by a keynote address from Elizabeth Box, Head of Research RAC Foundation, entitled “Dispelling the Myths about Older Drivers”.

Further contributors will include expert advisors from leading vehicle manufacturers, the Department of Transport, Transport Focus and The General Medical Council as well as organisations from The Forum of Mobility Centres amongst others.

Session 1: 11.00am – Older Driver: More or less satisfied?

Focusing on vehicle and transport issues that can help or hinder the driving experience for older drivers.

Session 2: 11.30am – Car design and technology: What does the future hold for older drivers?

Review changes in technology that can enable older drivers to continue driving safely and for longer, with a focus on vehicle designing for increased comfort and easier accessibility. Plus an interesting discussion on developments in driverless cars – can they really help the older driver?

Session 3: 12.15pm – Making the right choice – what to look for and what to avoid.

With information on achieving pain free driving, the session provides advice on new and existing seating and control adaptations. Plus understanding and testing the options available to the older motorist.

Session 4: 2.30pm – Fitness to drive: The Medical View

Do doctors know enough about the issues? How does fitness affect driving and decision making capabilities for the older driver? Is there enough medical knowledge on this important issue?

Session 5: 3.20pm – When it’s time to stop

The session focuses on helping older people correctly decide when it is time to cease driving and provides alternative options showing why giving up needn’t be the end of the road.

Dedicated Disabled Volunteer Appointed Ambassador For 2016 Silverstone Mobility Roadshow Incorporating Get Going Live!

Stephanie Leaf, 24, from Cottingham, East Yorkshire, has been appointed as Event Ambassador for The 2016 Mobility Roadshow and Get Going Live! at Silverstone Circuit, Northants. 26-28th May.

Stephanie lives with Friedreich’s Ataxia, a rare progressive disease that causes damage to the nervous system and affects coordination. A regular annual visitor and volunteer at The Mobility Roadshow she has found the event crucial when researching accessible vehicles and assistive products for independent mobility.

The free-to-attend Mobility Roadshow is the UK’s premier consumer focussed event for people of all ages living with restricted mobility. Organised by charity Mobility Choice, it provides visitors with unique test- driving opportunities in adapted and wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVS) around the historic Silverstone circuit. The Mobility Roadshow also displays the largest range of specialist adapted driving controls at any UK disability event. The popular Get Going Live! feature for young and novice drivers with disabilities, age 16 plus, provides free test drives in the safe presence of a professional driver, the chance to try an impressive range of adapted controls and even take a mock theory test. Plus, inside the Silverstone Wing, a diverse showcase of mobility products, including wheelchairs, scooters and trikes, are available to compare at leisure.

Stephanie first noticed her mobility had altered whilst taking her GCSEs but successfully managed to complete her exams. However, starting driving lessons soon after in a manual car left her struggling, and she changed to an automatic after a few lessons. It was at this point that Stephanie’s instructor introduced the idea of hand controls which she subsequently found much easier than using her feet. Having passed her driving test in July 2012, Stephanie found visiting The Mobility Roadshow invaluable in helping her decide on a suitable accessible vehicle purchase with adaptations and controls to meet her requirements.
